I was walking down the road one day when my mobile phone rang. A strange       on the other end spoke to me, “Dad, please come back soon. I miss you so much!” I sensed that it was a     number. A little while later, the call came once again, so I rudely answered, “You’ve had the wrong number!” and then       .
During the following days, I got the same number now and then. But I didn’t care much     it.
Then one day she kept calling me      I didn't answer. Finally I answered the phone and heard a weak voice, “Dad, please come back. I miss you so much! Dad, I’m in so much pain! Mom said you were too busy to take      of me. But, dad, please     me again, OK?” The innocent(天真)    was difficult to refuse. I made a     kiss on the phone and heard the weak voice say, “Thank you...Dad, I am so…happy, so…happy…”
Shortly after this, I fell       about who had been on the other end of my phone. So I called back, and a woman answered, “Sorry, sir. I am really sorry to have troubled you. My daughter has had cancer(癌症) since she was born. And her father… died in an accident a short while ago. I dare not tell her this sad     . Poor baby. When she couldn’t bear (忍受) the painful chemotherapy (化疗), she would cry for her dad, who had always      her. I really couldn't bear it, but I could do    for her so I gave her your phone number…”
“How is your daughter now?”  I couldn't       to ask.
“She’s      . You must have kissed her on the phone, because she passed away with a smile, tightly holding the mobile phone…”
My eyes watered and I was so sad to hear that.

2.                              Brother’s song of life
Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on the way, she did what she could do to help her 3-year-old son Michael prepare for it. She and her husband found out that the new baby was going to be a girl. Day after day, night after night, Michael sang to his sister in his mom’s tummy(肚子).
Finally, Michael’s little sister was born. But she was in a very serious condition. The doctor told the parents there was very little hope. They kept the baby girl in the intensive care unit(ICU, 重症监护室). Karen was so sad. She decided to plan for her funeral(葬礼). Michael, however, kept begging his parents to let him see his sister. “I want to sing to her,” he would say. Eventually, Karen decided to take Michael to his sister. This may be the last time he sees her alive.
Michael looked at his baby sister. After a moment, he began to sing. In the pure-hearted voice of a three-year-old, Michael sang: “You are my sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray.”
Immediately the baby girl seemed to respond(回应). Her pulse rate(脉搏率)began to calm down. “Keep on singing, Michael,” encouraged Karen with tears in her eyes. “You never know, dear, how much I love you, please don’t take my sunshine away.” As Michael sang to his sister, the baby’s breath became smooth.

QUESTION: Can you quickly learn to set a thermostat(温度调节器)?
Don’t look down upon such a task. It shows your ability to solve problems in creative ways, said the OECD(经合组织). The OECD recently gave a problem-solving test to 85,000 students. They were all 15 years old, and from 44 countries.
The test give each student four to eight everyday problems to solve. For example, they had to set a thermostat, and find the quickest way to a place. Students from Japan and China were also among thetop-performinggroups. They did a better job than those from countries like the US, Canada, Australia, the UK and France.
Problem-solving skills are important, said the OECD. “Today’s 15-year-olds with poor problem-solving will become tomorrow’s adults struggling(努力)to find or keep a good job,” said Andreas, acting director of Education and Skills at the OECD. ”The world economy(经济)no longer pays you for what you know. 4. Whether you like it or not, your parents are responsible(负责任的) for you, at least until you’ re out of high school. But does it feel like your parents are stressing you out with their love? Do you often fight with them?
Hu Muqing, 16, of Shenyang, complains that his parents only care about his grades and not his other needs. He and his parents fight the most about the time he spends watching TV and on the Internet. The Shenyang teenager said, “They think I should concentrate on my work because I’m in middle school. However, I need to be able to relax. Most of my friends can watch TV and surf the Web a lot. Sometimes it’s hard to talk to them.” After some negotiations (商谈), Hu has been allowed to watch TV for 15 to 20 minutes every night, but has been told to keep away from the computer.
Shen Ying, 17, of Jianyang, Sichuan Province, feels she has grown up now. So she wants more respect(尊重) from her parents. “My father shouted at me when he’s in a bad mood. He doesn’t listen to me, but instead acts like, ‘I’m the boss’!” said the teenager “I’d like my parents to treat me like a friend and understand that respect is a two-way street.”
Lu Yiting, 15, of Shantou, has a different problem with her parents. They think she spends too much time with her friends and is falling into bad company. “I want trust(信任) from my parents,” Lu said.
It’s the age when teenagers are becoming more independent, but their parents care very much about their kids’ futures, said Sun Yunxiao, a senior researcher at the China Youth and Children Research Center. Sun suggests that teenagers should learn to communicate with their parents effectively. “Find the right time for a talk. On Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, say ‘Thank you’ to your parents or give them a small gift with a letter so they can get inside your head a little,” he advised. Sun also believes that teenagers have to work to get trust and respect from their parents. “You need to make sure they know that you’ re not going to screw up(搞砸) your exams or let them down. Let them know that you want to do well, and that you will do well” he said.
